Obituary of Jamaun Lamar Harkness

Jamaun Lamar Harkness passed away peacefully on Friday, June 12, 2020. Jamaun was born November 9, 1977, the son of Inette Harkness and Roger Williams, in Kalamazoo, MI at Borgess Medical Center. He attended Kalamazoo Central High School, then West Michigan College of Barbering and Beauty College, which led to his career as a hairstylist. Jamaun was a devoted son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and loyal friend to many. Jamaun accepted Christ at an early age at Second Baptist Missionary Church in Kalamazoo, MI. As a child, he loved to sing gospel music, and The Clark Sisters were his favorite gospel artists. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ezra Williams; Fraternal grandparents; Jack McMillan and Ruby Harkness; Four Aunts; LaVada White, Vera Augusta, Mary Augusta, Nona (Otha) Kelley; Two uncles, I.G. McMillian and James Harkness. Our Son leaves to cherish his loving memory Inette Harkness, mother; Roger (Cassandra) Williams, father, and stepmother; Mildred A. Williams Grandmother; Godmother, Toni “G Mama” Kelly-Darden; Five brothers: Lamar Woodard, Ezra Williams, Daren Roberts, Jr., Roger Williams Jr., and Davonta Williams; Seven sisters: JaNaia Harkness, Sharnita Williams, Tanisha Williams, Sherrita Williams, Tiana Williams, Kamarey Williams, and Jaryia Eason; Six Uncles; Gary Harkness, Johnny Williams, Billy Williams, Lenny (Kimberly) Williams, Malcolm Williams; Six Aunts, Constance Augusta, Georgia Whitfield, Charlene Harkness, Linda Graves, Victoria Williams, Monifa (Joseph) Vincent and special friend, Mashontay Wright. Jamaun’s ability to design hair uplifted the inner personality of his clients. His voice, dance moves, and innovative live performances developed into the well-loved “Chyna”. Chyna brought life to the atmosphere and welcomed everyone with a vivid smile. All his parents; Inette Harkness, Roger & Cassandra Williams, eagerly awaited to witness his talent of entertaining crowds with his live performances throughout the State of Michigan where he has won multiple pageants and even winning Ms. Michigan. Chyna’s siblings embraced, supported, and celebrated his talents and victories. He was known for his performances, hair do’s, fashions, and wearing shades. Chyna will truly be missed by family, friends, and the LBGTQ community. Knowing Jamaun was an experience but knowing Chyna was a life-changing event.
